Activities of Daily Living (ADL)

Activities of daily living (ADLs) are routine activities people do every day without assistance. Cancer patients who are too weak to carry out these activities on their own may need some help from their caregivers. Knowing how to help patients and be able to assist patients correctly would make caring for them less stressful.

There are six basic ADLs: eating, bathing, getting dressed, toileting, transferring, and moving around.

6 Basic Activities of Daily Living (ADL)

In this following video, we will be touching on one of the activities of daily living – transfers from bed to wheelchair with minimum assistance. It is important for caregivers to know the correct techniques of transferring so that they could control and balance their body well to prevent back injuries. Knowing how to help patients and be able to assist patients correctly would make caring for them less stressful.

Tips for transferring

Before moving the patient, it is important to pay attention to these points:

  1. Visualise in your mind how the move is going to be carried out.
  2. Understand the constraints of the environment and those of the patient as each scenario and patient is different.
  3. Always inform the patient what you will be doing and work at patient's pace to avoid any sudden movements.
  4. Remind the patient not to push or pull you or any surfaces during the transfer process.
  5. Check to see if the patient is in any pain at all times.
  6. Always stay close to the patient so that you will be able to react if anything happens.

It can be done easily when the instructions are followed closely. The same steps may be applied for other similar transfers.
