Palliative Care Nurse |
1. Why become a palliative care nurse? If not a palliative care nurse, would you have been in any other profession?
Palliative care is a special nursing profession. In my nursing experience, I often ask myself: “What about the patient’s self-reflection on his own life? Does the patient have a sense of quality or meaning in life?” I realised that there is more that I can do as a nurse for the patient besides administering medication, injections and taking parameters. This has encouraged me to become a palliative care nurse which allows me to have a special role in the patient’s life by being a good companion to the patient and his/her family members. I am able to provide necessary information, support the patients and their families during their difficult times until their final moments. I believe this is my calling.
2. What’s one goal you hope to achieve as a palliative care nurse?
As a palliative care nurse, my goal is to ensure that patients receive the best possible care for their pain and other symptoms controlled. Thus they are able to lead a quality life in comfort and find strength and hope to enjoy their last moments with their loved ones.
3. Any interesting experiences? Or unforgettable incidences?
Four years ago, I nursed a patient who was diagnosed with leukaemia. She had a fighting spirit, always came for chemotherapy cheerfully. Despite her weakening physical condition, she was still able to encourage other patients in the room to fight against their illnesses. I learnt from her husband that even after her discharge, she rang some of them up to ask on how they were. She was also very grateful to nurses whom accompanied her during her treatment journey. I was often touched by her words and actions. She passed on after a year of fighting. She had lived well and I had learnt a lot from her.
4. How do you cope with the patient’s emotional state? Does it affect you as well?
I am touched to be part of the patients’ lives in providing the care during their final moments of their life.
5. What would you say to someone who would like to volunteer or counsel with CanHOPE?
By following your passion to volunteer or counsel, you will find a greater meaning to your own life.
CanHOPE is a non-profit cancer counselling and support provided by Parkway Cancer Centre, Singapore.
