How caffeine fights cancer

Sharon (Community Relations Oncology Nurse)

Caffeinated drinks like coffee and tea may help prevent skin cancer by interrupting a DNA repair pathway, and therefore killing precancerous cells.

The results, published on August 15th 2011 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, lend support to the idea that caffeine could be added to sunblock to increase its protective effects.

More research is needed before any recommendations can be made. Until then, the best advice remains to apply SPF 30+ sunblock, seek shade and wear protective clothing like a broad rimmed hat, sunglasses and clothing that covers arms and legs.
