Selenium does not prevent cancer

Sharon (Community Relations Oncology Nurse)

Selenium is a mineral naturally found in the human body, soil and rocks. Many people take it for it’s potential health benefits, including cancer prevention. However, a new review from the Cochrane Library has found there is no convincing evidence taking high doses of selenium can prevent cancer. While daily selenium recommendations from the United States and World Health Organization vary between 30 and 55 micrograms per day for adults, the authors note, companies that sell the supplements claim higher doses have a range of health benefits, including cancer prevention. They recommend more research into this subject as taking large doses of Selenium may actually be harmful.
